Number of fisheries
The number of fisheries has declined over the years, both in Nordland (NOR) and Botnia (FIN) area, as well as nationwide in both countries. The decline has not affected gender rations in either land or area. There are on average 2 to 3 per cent females registered as fishers in Norway. The corresponding ratio is 9 to 13 per cent in Finland.
Mean age of the main occupation fishers in Norway is 45,8, and for secondary occupation fishers 65,3 years (2013). The mean age of Finnish fishers is 50,5 years (2013). The figures for main occupation fishers have an upward trend which indicates that the younger generations have not seen fishing as their future occupation. A part of this phenomenon may result from the weakening profitability.
